Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil (September 22, 1887 – May 9, 1959) was a prominent social activist and educator from Maharashtra, India, best known for his lifelong dedication to mass education and the upliftment of marginalized communities.
Early Life and Influences
Born into a Jain farming family in the village of Kumbhoj in the Kolhapur district, Patil was exposed to the realities of poverty and caste discrimination from a young age. During his education in Kolhapur, he stayed at a Jain boarding school and was deeply influenced by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the ruler of Kolhapur, who championed social equality and the education of backward castes. Patil was later expelled from his boarding school for attending the inauguration of a hostel dedicated to untouchable girls, reflecting his early rejection of rigid caste barriers.His social philosophy was heavily shaped by leaders like Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde, and Mahatma Gandhi.
Educational Reforms and Rayat Education Society
Patil realized that the eradication of social evils required the widespread education of the Bahujan Samaj (the masses).He actively participated in the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth Seeker’s Society) founded by Mahatma Phule.
- Rayat Shikshan Sanstha:On October 4, 1919, Patil established the Rayat Shikshan Sanstha (Rayat Education Society) in the village of Kale.”Rayat” translates to “masses” in Marathi, signifying the organization’s focus on rural and underprivileged children.
- “Earn and Learn” Philosophy:To make education accessible, he coined the “earn and learn” philosophy, starting hostels where children from lower castes and poor families could stay, study, and work to cover their expenses.
- Expansion:Throughout his lifetime, the Sanstha expanded significantly, creating numerous cosmopolitan boarding schools, voluntary schools, teacher training colleges, and higher education institutions across Maharashtra.
Gandhian Influence
Following a meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in Mumbai in 1921, Patil was profoundly moved by Gandhi’s use of Khadi and his simple lifestyle.Patil adopted Khadi attire, integrated Gandhian principles into his daily life, and vowed to establish 101 schools in Gandhi’s name.
Honors and Legacy
For his immense contributions to social reform and education, the people of Maharashtra bestowed upon him the title “Karmaveer”, meaning “King of Actions”.
- In 1959, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian honor.
- The University of Pune awarded him an honorary D.Litt in education in 1959.
- The Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil State University was founded in his honor in 2021.
