VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS will launch people?s agitation to ensure quality education for all children by forcing the government to act on the matter. The decision was taken at the conclusion of a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) on ?challenges of quality education? organised under the aegis of the MP Shiksha Abhiyan at the AICUF Ashram on Friday.

The participants in the Jan Sunwai said depriving the rural and poor children of the constitutional right to education at a time when country is going places is a blemish on the democracy and only a strong people’s movement can change the situation.

The representatives of about 100 voluntary organisations working in 35 districts of the State participated in the public hearing before a panel including former education minister and MLA Dhal Singh Bisen, Tribal Development Commissioner Raghav Chandra, national convener for People’s Movement on Equal Education System Amrish Rai, state convener of the MP Shiksha Abhiyan Avinash Jhade, programe officer of ActionAid Angela Taneja and activist Pratibha Shinde.

Bisen said strong political will along with increasing number of schools and teachers in rural areas is necessary to achieve the target of quality education for all.

He bemoaned that the rural areas were badly lagging in this respect. Raghav Chandra emphasised the role of voluntary organisations in ensuring quality education in tribal-dominated areas.

Avinash Jhade said unless expert teachers are made available on the basis on students’ number, dropout rate cannot be curbed. He condemned the unnecessary experimentation being carried out in the preliminary education field.

Angela Taneja said that unless the Education Act 2005 is turned into a union law, the target of education for all cannot be achieved. Amrish Rai reiterated that without political agenda education scenario cannot be improved.
