Status of the institution

Dr. T. K. Tope Arts & Commerce Night College, Parel, Mumbai, established on 20th June 1984 (40 years in June 2024), permanently affiliated to the University of Mumbai, is a grant-in-aid, co-education institution.

Its an evening college, recognised by the UGC under 2f & 12b. Though it is not a minority institution, it basically works for the students coming from a working class background.

University of Mumbai has made the provision in its statutes to grant autonomy to its affiliated colleges. It has around 59 autonomous colleges as of Feb. 2024 out of which 12 colleges have been awarded empowered status. We have not thought about autonomy till date. But we wish to be recognised by the UGC as a college with potential for excellence (CPE).

College campus is located in the Parel area of the grand old city of Mumbai, which is considered as the financial capital of India. The campus area is about 0.72 acres (2943.17 sq. metres, 31680 sq. feet) and the built up area is 6115.70 sq. m. (65829.30 sq. ft.). See the BMC certificate for details.

Entry qualification for UG programmes is higher secondary certificate examination (HSC) and for PG programme graduation is required.

All courses are taught in English and Marathi medium. In the commerce stream majority of the students opt for English medium and in the Arts stream majority of them opt for the Marathi medium. Students are allowed to write their examination either in English or Marathi language.

For the Arts section one division i.e. a student strength of 120 is sanctioned for first, second and third year BA classes. 10% extra (12) students can be admitted after the approval of University of Mumbai. We apply for this 10% extra quota as and when required. During last five academic years (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 & 2022-23) we asked for this extra quota in 2018-19.
