Prisoner’s dilemma

The Prisoner’s Dilemma is a classic concept in game theory and political science that’s really interesting. Imagine two criminals, let’s call them A and B, who are arrested and put in separate cells. They both have two choices: to cooperate with each other by staying silent (C), or to betray each other by confessing (D).

Here’s how it works:

• If both A and B cooperate (stay silent), they each get a relatively light sentence, say a year in prison for a minor charge.
• If one cooperates while the other confesses (betrays), the one who confesses gets an even lighter sentence (maybe a few months or even goes free), while the one who stayed silent gets a heavy sentence (several years).
• If both confess, they both get moderate sentences, but it’s worse than if they had both cooperated.

The dilemma is that no matter what the other person does, it’s in each person’s best interest to confess (betray), because that minimizes their own sentence. But if they both do that, they both end up worse off compared to if they had cooperated.

It’s a fascinating concept in political science because it illustrates how rational individuals can make decisions that aren’t in their collective self-interest. It’s often used to analyze international relations and cooperation among nations.

अ ने ब वर आरोप केला आणि ब शांत राहीला तर अ ची सुटका आणि ब ला ३ वर्षांची कैद.
दोघेही शांत राहीले तर दोघांना १ वर्षाची कैद.

या परिस्थितीत दोघे कैदी कोणता पर्याय निवडतील ?

केवळ स्वार्थी विचार करणारा (आणि बहुतेक सगळे तसाच विचार करणार) कोणताही माणूस पर्याय क्र. दोन निवडणार. आपण गप्प बसलो तर आपल्याला तीन वर्षांची सजा होईल ही भीती दोघांनाही असणार. दुसरा गप्प बसेल याची खात्री दोघांनाही नाही.

भारत पाकिस्तान किंवा कोणत्याही दोन शत्रु राष्ट्रांमध्ये याच प्रकारचे प्रश्न असतात. विश्वासाच्या अभावामुळे दोन्ही राष्ट्रे आपली लष्करी ताकद वाढवत राहतात.
