In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/United-States\">United States<\/a>, if the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/president-government-official\">president<\/a>\u00a0does not sign a bill within 10 days of its passage by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Congress-of-the-United-States\">Congress<\/a>, it automatically becomes law. However, if\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Congress-of-the-United-States\">Congress<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/adjourns\">adjourns<\/a>\u00a0within the 10-day period and the president does not sign the bill, it is automatically vetoed, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/veto\">veto<\/a>\u00a0is absolute.
