{"id":2854,"date":"2022-03-29T13:31:35","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T08:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drtktopecollege.in\/?p=2854"},"modified":"2022-03-29T13:38:54","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T08:08:54","slug":"dt-denotified-tribes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drtktopecollege.in\/?p=2854","title":{"rendered":"DT &#8211; denotified tribes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>DT &#8211; denotified tribes &#8211; \u0935\u093f\u092e\u0941\u0915\u094d\u0924 \u091c\u093e\u0924\u0940<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Denotified Tribes<\/strong>&nbsp;(DNTs), also known as&nbsp;<em><strong>Vimukta Jati<\/strong><\/em>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denotified_Tribes#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;are the tribes that were listed originally under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Criminal_Tribes_Act\">Criminal Tribes Act<\/a>&nbsp;of 1871,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denotified_Tribes#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;as&nbsp;<em>Criminal Tribes<\/em>&nbsp;and &#8220;addicted to the systematic commission of non-bailable offences.&#8221; Once a tribe became &#8220;notified&#8221; as criminal, all its members were required to register with the local magistrate, failing which they would be charged with a &#8220;crime&#8221; under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Penal_Code\">Indian Penal Code<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Criminal Tribes Act was repealed in 1949 and thus &#8216;de-notified&#8217; the tribal communities.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denotified_Tribes#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;This Act, however, was replaced by a series of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habitual_Offenders_Acts\">Habitual Offenders Acts<\/a>, that asked police to investigate a &#8220;suspect&#8217;s&#8221; &#8220;criminal tendencies&#8221; and whether their occupation is &#8220;conducive to settled way of life.&#8221; The denotified tribes were reclassified as &#8220;habitual offenders&#8221; in 1959.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name &#8220;Criminal Tribes&#8221; is itself a misnomer as no definition of tribe denotes occupation, but they were identified as tribes &#8220;performing&#8221; their primary occupation. The first census was in 1871 and at that time there was no consensus nor any definition of what constitutes a &#8220;tribe&#8221;.
