The Two Pillars of the Superstructure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gramsci divided the Superstructure into two distinct but overlapping spheres:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Political Society (The State):<\/strong> This is the realm of <strong>coercion<\/strong>. It includes the police, the military, the legal system, and the bureaucracy. It functions through force or the threat of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Civil Society:<\/strong> This is the realm of <strong>consent<\/strong>. It includes &#8220;private&#8221; institutions like schools, churches, trade unions, media, and the family. It functions through the spread of ideas and values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Cultural_Hegemony\"><\/span>2. Cultural Hegemony<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The core of Gramsci&#8217;s analysis is <strong>Hegemony<\/strong>. He argued that a dominant class maintains power not just through the &#8220;big stick&#8221; of the state, but by making its own worldview appear as &#8220;common sense&#8221; to the rest of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Manufacturing Consent:<\/strong> The ruling class uses civil society to socialize people into accepting the status quo. If you believe the current system is natural, inevitable, and beneficial for everyone, you won&#8217;t rebel against it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Protective Layer:<\/strong> Gramsci described civil society as a &#8220;system of earthworks and ditches&#8221; that stands behind the state. If the government faces a crisis, these cultural institutions stabilize the social order by reinforcing dominant values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_War_of_Movement_vs_War_of_Position\"><\/span>3. War of Movement vs. War of Position<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because power is rooted in civil society, Gramsci argued that a traditional revolution (a &#8220;War of Movement&#8221; or direct assault on the state) would fail in developed Western societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>Strategy<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Description<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>War of Movement<\/strong><\/td><td>A frontal attack on the state (e.g., the Russian Revolution). Effective where the state is &#8220;everything&#8221; and civil society is &#8220;primordial and gelatinous.&#8221;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>War of Position<\/strong><\/td><td>A long-term cultural and ideological struggle within civil society. This involves building an alternative &#8220;counter-hegemony&#8221; to win the hearts and minds of the people before taking political power.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_The_Role_of_Intellectuals\"><\/span>4. The Role of Intellectuals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gramsci believed that every social group creates its own &#8220;intellectuals&#8221; to give it homogeneity and an awareness of its own function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Traditional Intellectuals:<\/strong> Those who see themselves as autonomous and independent of class (e.g., priests, professors, artists).
